From our weekly Sunday Love Feast to dedicated spaces like Studio OM and Mantra House, we provide welcoming environments for spiritual exploration, personal growth, and community connection.
What is Mantra Meditation?
The word mantra has its roots in the Sanskrit term manas, meaning “mind.” In Sanskrit, manas refers to the human faculty that organizes sensory impressions before presenting them to consciousness.
The word mantra (मन्त्र) translates to “an instrument of the mind” or “that which protects the mind.”
A mantra is a sacred sound vibration—comprising a word, phrase, or phoneme—repeated mentally or verbally. As Srila Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON, explained:
“Mantra means that which delivers you from mental concoction and mental speculation.” (Lecture, New York, September 8, 1966)
In spiritual practice, mantras are tools for transcendence. By connecting with divine sound vibrations, they protect the mind from material distractions and elevate the practitioner’s consciousness. Srila Prabhupada emphasized that chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra—
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare—is the most effective mantra for this age:
“By chanting this mantra, one is directly in touch with the Supreme Lord. This sound vibration is the sublime method for reviving our Krishna consciousness.” (Bhagavad-gita As It Is, 9.2, Purport)
Mantra meditation, particularly chanting the Mahamantra, offers protection from the miseries of material existence, including the cycles of birth and death (samsara). Srila Prabhupada taught that this transcendental practice purifies the mind, brings inner peace, and reconnects the soul with its eternal relationship with Krishna.
As Srila Prabhupada assured:
“Chanting the Hare Krishna mantra is not only the simplest method but the sublime method of reviving our original Krishna consciousness.” (Science of Self-Realization, Chapter 3)
For those on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual awakening, mantra meditation provides a gateway to divine bliss, inner transformation, and ultimate liberation.
What is Kirtan?
Kirtan is the singing or chanting of sacred mantras and is one of the simplest yet most profound forms of yoga meditation. Rooted in ancient spiritual traditions, kirtan transcends language, nationality, and religious boundaries, much like the universal beauty of the sunrise.
Through the repetition of divine sound vibrations, participants experience a sense of inner peace, spiritual happiness, and connection with the Supreme. Kirtan often follows a call-and-response format, where the lead singer chants a mantra, and the participants respond. This participatory style creates a collective atmosphere of devotion and joy, inviting everyone to sing from the heart and contribute to the shared experience.
As Srila Prabhupada taught:
“Kirtan is not merely music; it is a method to awaken love for Krishna. By chanting the holy names of the Lord, our dormant spiritual consciousness is revived.” (Lecture, London, July 1972)
In addition to fostering community, kirtan helps practitioners cultivate mindfulness and devotion. It softens the heart, clears the mind, and expands one’s ability to remain present in the moment. Srila Prabhupada emphasized that the Hare Krishna Mahamantra—
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare—is the most potent mantra for kirtan, enabling participants to directly connect with Krishna through sound.
This ancient practice is a harmonious blend of sound, spirituality, and community, offering a unique path to self-realization and transcendental bliss.
